My dear sister
I will now answer your letter which I received a few days ago. I am glad to hear you are all well, and standing the hot weather. It is some hot here, but you know I am used to it and do not mind it much. Well to get down to business. I ended my long voyage of very near 12,000 miles and arrived on May the first after passing a pleasant trip with nothing to do but sleep and eat from three to five times each day. The voyage clear through was uneventful and nothing of any moment whatever happened.
So I came on here to the field and have been working everyday since except on the Fourth of July.
We run things a little bit different here than we do at home. Just one white man on each well. He works daytime and has fifteen native helpers who do all the work under his direction. Of course I do not work very hard, but it is tiresome and the time seems to drag when a fellow has nothing to do but sit around.
I am sorry to hear that poor old Mike is gone. But as we all must go sooner or later, I guess he is about as well off. There is one thing sure, poor old fellow he never set the world on fire.
These natives are a shiftless lot here. They are paid only from 15 cents to 80 cents per day and many are not worth that. I have fifteen working with me, and they cannot do one half as much as one American tool dresser. I am going to have some pictures taken of well soon and will send you one or I will send them all toAlice with directions to mail one to you.
I will have a joke onAlice . The men and women all dress alike here and all wear long hair. The only difference in their dress is that the men wear their head rags off and let their hair down and I intend to tell her they are all women that I have working with me.
Well it is four months today since I left Columbus and it will be five when you get this, that is a very small part of the three long years I will have to stay here and I intend to stay the full time unless I get a chance to go to one particular place in another part of the world where I want to go to.
I am glad you gaveBell my address and I would be glad to hear from her. I hope you told her that Alice and I tried to find them when I was home. Well, Sis I suppose you are getting tired so hoping this will find you all well and hoping you will answer and tell me all the news. I will close with regards to all I remain, J. E.
