35 While Jim was working for the Child Guidance Institute

While Jim was working for the Child Guidance Institute he traveled the State of Michigan with advice for parents and problem children. With his father gone for so many years of his growing up, Jim decided he would be an advocate for the nurturing care of children. Working with children both before they got in trouble with the law and after they were, He was consistent in his commitment to them.
The study for Willow Run was predicated on the involvement of his caring for chilren when the parents were both employed or one was away at war.
The writing of the book was completed in 1950. This was after the war was over and Jim and his family moved to Detroit, Michigan. Jim was teaching at the Detroit Institute of Technology during the day and attending Wayne University State at night to obtain his masters degree in Education with his major being Evaluation and Research. The family lived in a small house with both of the grandmothers as both women were widows and unable to care for themselves. Things worked out fine until one of the grandmothers developed Alzheimer’s. It became a twenty-four hour job that ended with hospitalization. The year following this Mary the eldest daughter enlisted in the WAC's, I graduated from High School and the family decided to move west to the land Jim had walked through nearly thirty years before.
